Accomplishments
ACHIEVEMENTS AS CITY COUNCILOR AND MAYOR 2006 – 2009
Have helped lead the city through the most challenging time in Sedona’s history. Challenges have included the resignations of the City Manager, the City Clerk, the City Magistrate and three City Councilors. Additionally, we have experienced the worst economic downturn since the great depression, the SR 179 construction has been disrupting traffic and business and we experienced a devastating flood.
- Formed a committee to review the Roadrunner transit system. As a result of the committee’s work, the transit system has been completely revamped, saving the city $125,000/year and is now serving the greater Sedona community.
- Helped to establish the Greater Sedona Substance Abuse Coalition which is addressing the need for more education, treatment and awareness of substance abuse in the Sedona area
- Instrumental in establishing the Verde Valley Regional Housing Commission which is a collaborative effort to address housing needs in the Verde Valley
- Instrumental in establishing funding for new signature events in Sedona. New events that are eligible for funding include the Book Fair, Red Rock Canvas and the upcoming Photofest event
- Involved in the development of the new “branding” that is being used for marketing businesses in Sedona
- Helped to create the Sedona Events Alliance which is a collaborative effort to establish new events in Sedona and to coordinate efforts on existing events
- Initiated the “Mayors Lunches” to create a format for “one on one” dialogue with the Sedona citizens
- Instrumental in forming the “budget steering committee” in 2007, comprised of financial experts in our community that made recommendations to Council on budgetary issues. A similar committee will be formed in 2010
- Have improved relationships with leaders at the local, regional and state levels resulting in additional funding from all of these sources. Over $1,500,000 in additional funding has been received from Yavapai County alone.
- Have worked to move environmental issues forward such as bicycle friendly city, dark sky city, fire wise city, energy conservation and green building codes, alternative transit, and the National Scenic Area designation
- Serve on 17 different local, regional and state level boards, committees and commissions to advocate for Sedona’s best interests
