Reality Check for Perez

By Sandford Bach

To assume as Mr. Perez has, that the will of the people means anything in real politics, is a naïve and utterly ridiculous perspective.

He claims the community has been galvanized against the council majority and will work feverishly to replace the majority with a majority of its own. He is totally wrong. The reason this majority exists is because they are smarter, better organized and is always on the winning side.

These majority members understand real power does not lie with the people. It lies with those who lead them. Leaders know instinctively what is right for the community because they occupy a position where their perspective allows them to see clearly what needs to be done.

They are smart enough not to listen to the 30 or so citizens who regularly attend council meetings incensed over this issue or that. They know they do not represent the majority of the people in Sedona because if it was so, they would not have been elected.

Yes, it is true three of the four current council members have been appointed but they were appointed by the majority, who in their wisdom, know what’s best for Sedona. Electing government officials can lead to disastrous results. Just look at our current administration in Washington and you would agree.

Further, these people who come to the meetings and complain about this have no power. They are seen as disenfranchised-political insignificants gathering in front of the dinner table of real power hoping a few crumbs will roll off into their hands.

Sure, they will be out there in the community going door-to-door in great numbers talking to people personally about what they believe in. They will form PACs. They will endorse candidates. But they will lose. Why? Because they are outclassed by those now in power! They are not as smart. They lose every time.

Yes, there was the current mayor defeating the former mayor by a few votes. But that could not keep the former mayor from getting back on the council and continuing where she left off.

Also, powerful entities in the community back the majority and these entities will do what they must to preserve amenable representation on the council in order to maintain the order they are accustomed to.

True, a change in the face of the council could prove to be troublesome for those waiting for the 89A lights money and spell doom for those ready to make Sedona a better place through land trades with the Feds. But that will not happen.

There will be in-fighting between the anti-lights and pro NSA factions. Votes will be divided by the majority. The majority will out think and out maneuver the opposition. That simple!

I also challenge Mr. Perez to debate on any issue he wishes of importance to the community. I await the challenge!
