Dan Surber

Dan Surber is an Arizona native, born and raised in Southeastern Arizona who, with his family, moved to Sedona 22 years ago.

Dan attended Safford High School, Eastern Arizona College, Arizona State University and The University of Arizona. After graduating from the University of Arizona with a degree in Architecture he began working with Don Woods, Architect. For the past 16 years, Dan has owned a diverse and successful architectural business.

Dan with his wife Bobbie raised four daughters in Sedona; Andrea who was one of the first attendees at Sedona Red Rock High School, Sara, who is married and has given Dan and Bobbie their first granddaughter, Alana, Rachel, who will be graduating from college in Oklahoma this spring and Marissa who currently attends West Sedona School. After 22 years in Sedona they recognize that Sedona is a great place to live and raise a family.

Dan and his wife Bobbie have always felt a strong connection and commitment to giving back to their community and have served on several boards and commissions some of which include:

  • Sedona Housing Commission
  • Esperanza Orphanage in Puerto Penasco, Mexico
  • Red Rock High Booster Club
  • Red Rock High Site Council
  • Sedona Main Street Program
  • Oak Creek School District
  • The American Youth Soccer Organization. (AYSO)

Another passion for the Surber family is Project Esperanza. While in Mexico the Surber’s saw a chance to make a difference for orphaned children and for the past five years have organized, transported, fed and chaperoned, several Sedona youth groups to Puerto Penasco, Mexico where they have been slowly but steadily constructing a building that will house a new chapel and two classrooms for Esperanza Para Los Niños Orphanage. This is a labor of love for the Surber’s.

Currently, Dan is the AYSO Sedona town commissioner and continues to enjoy coaching and refereeing youth soccer.

Dan has spent the past three years serving on Sedona Housing Commission. While serving on that commission he was instrumental in developing Sedona’s Housing Policy, the Mixed Use Ordinance and the Accessory Dwellings Ordinance. He has also participated in several design and redevelopment forums sponsored by the City of Sedona along with workshops conducted by the ASU Planning and Design Academy. Through his work as an Architect Mr. Surber has always respected and protected the natural beauty of Sedona. This is reflected by several KSB Building Development Awards. He also has an understanding and knowledge of the City of Sedona Community Plan, Land Development Code and the Character District Design Guidelines.

Dan’s Philosophy:

Over the years I believe I have established strong relationships and many partnerships within the community of Sedona. I will represent and listen to our diverse community and not focus on one special interest or issue. I will be fair, logical and willing to do my homework when making a decision and know that I will be able to work respectfully with other councilpersons. I know that we are bound by rules of law and will honor private property rights while making sure that the diverse community I serve will be well represented. I believe in fiscal/economic responsibility, long range planning with regional cooperation while preserving the unique environment and beauty of Sedona.
